Ruan Mei Build Guide & Pull Verdict — Honkai: Star Rail
Ruan Mei is a 5-star Harmony character in Honkai: Star Rail and the S-tier support for break-centric teams. She is not a universal pick — outside of break compositions she is noticeably weaker — but inside break teams she remains one of the strongest supports in the game. This guide covers what she does, how to build her for free, and whether she is worth your pulls.
Pros
- 20% party-wide RES PEN passive — no rotation cost
- Best-in-slot relics are easily farmable with no RNG gating
- Best-in-slot light cone is free from Herta's Store (no gacha)
- Future-proof — benefits every break DPS released after her
- E0 does everything E6 does, just slightly less
Cons
- Limited 5-star — requires pulling her specific banner
- No healing or shielding — needs a sustain unit alongside
- Speed tuning required — must act before break DPS for optimal buff timing
- Weak outside of break teams — do not pull if you are not running break content
What Ruan Mei Does
Ruan Mei’s value comes from three stacking effects applied to the entire party:
Skill — Thread of Grace: Grants all allies a 50% Break Effect buff and a 10% DMG bonus when attacking Weakness-Broken enemies. Duration: 3 turns.
Ultimate — Thanatoplum Rebloom: Extends the Weakness-Broken state on all enemies for 2 turns. Enemies in this state take 10% increased DMG from all sources and cannot exit Weakness-Broken status early.
Talent — Inert Respiration: When enemies are Weakness-Broken, all allies gain 20% All-Type RES PEN passively. This is the line that makes her mandatory in most break teams — 20% RES PEN is enormous and applies without any action cost.
The combination of Break Effect amplification, Weakness-Broken extension, and party-wide RES PEN means she raises every teammate’s damage simultaneously — no investment in your other units is wasted.
Recommended Stats
| Stat | Target | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Break Effect | 180%+ | 300% with E1, but 180 is the functional floor |
| Speed | 134+ | Must act before your break DPS |
| HP / DEF | Whatever drops | Not a priority — she stays off-field |
Speed tuning matters. You want Ruan Mei to act before your break damage dealers to ensure her buffs are active when they hit. 134 SPD is the standard breakpoint for most content.
F2P Build
⚔ Weapon / Light Cone
🔮 Artifacts / Relics
- Memories of the Past at Superimposition 5 (S5) is genuinely competitive with most 5-star light cones. The Break Effect + Energy per hit on Weakness-Broken enemies is exactly what she wants.
- You do not need Ruan Mei's signature (Past Self in Mirror) to clear MoC 12. Many players run her at S5 MoTP with zero issues.
- Thief 4pc is the clear best-in-slot set. There is no F2P compromise needed here — it's just the right set and it's farmable.
- Talia: Kingdom of Banditry (ornament) adds more Break Effect and is also farmable from its Simulated Universe path.
✓ Full F2P build clears all endgame content. Signature and premium relics are a bonus, not a requirement.
Full Relic Guide
Body relics — recommended sets
4pc: 16% Break Effect (2pc) · 16% Break Effect + Energy on hit vs Weakness-Broken (4pc)
The only set worth farming. BiS by a wide margin — no exception.
4pc: 6% SPD (2pc) · +6% SPD team-wide for 1 turn after ultimate (4pc)
Use if your team benefits more from the SPD buff than extra Break Effect.
4pc: 16% Break Effect (2pc) · +30% Break Effect team-wide after ultimate (4pc)
Strong in double-Harmony compositions. Works best when paired with another support.
Planar ornaments
2pc: 16% Break Effect · Weakness-Broken DMG +20% team-wide when SPD ≥ 145
Farmable from Simulated Universe. Best ornament for break-focused Ruan Mei.
2pc: 5% Energy Regen Rate · Acts again at start of battle if SPD ≥ 120
Choose this if you struggle to get her ultimate up in time on turn 1.
Light Cones
Light Cone — recommended options
Ruan Mei's signature. Large Break Effect bonus + party energy regeneration on Weakness Break.
Pull only if you're investing long-term — F2P teams clear without this.
CRIT Rate + party CRIT DMG buff after ultimate. Strong if available from a shared account.
Break Effect + Energy on hit vs Weakness-Broken enemies. Best F2P option by a clear margin.
Farm Hertareum in Simulated Universe and buy from Herta's Store. S5 is the target.
Increases next ally's DMG after using skill. Available from Starlight Exchange (8 Undying Starlight per copy).
Solid alternative — less energy support, but easier to S5 if you already spend Starlight.
The F2P reality: S5 Memories of the Past is the target. Get it to S5 over time — the Break Effect and energy are good enough that many top-tier players use it over lower-Superimposition 5-stars.
Team Compositions
The battle pass badge below each character shows their F2P accessibility:
- FREE = obtained from story or permanent content
- 4★ = 4-star character (cheap to obtain, often available in standard pity)
- LMT = limited 5-star (requires saving pulls for their specific banner)
SuperBreak — Recommended F2P
Best F2P team for Memory of Chaos. HMC is free from the Trailblaze story. Gallagher is a 4-star healer who also applies Weakness-Broken on his own — this means the whole team generates Super Break damage. Strong even without Firefly if you have another break DPS.
Budget Break — No limited 5-stars
If you pulled Ruan Mei but have few other limited 5-stars, this is your team. Sushang is a 4-star break DPS available on the standard banner. Pela debuffs DEF and is farmable easily. Natasha is a 4-star healer given free early in the story. This team clears MoC with the right investment.
Boothill — Alt Limited DPS
Swap Firefly for Boothill if you pulled him instead. Bronya gives action advance for more turns. Gallagher keeps the team alive. Less AoE than the Firefly team but better single-target for bosses.
F2P Viability
E0 verdict: Pull if you are running a break team.
Ruan Mei is the S-tier support specifically for break compositions. If your main DPS relies on Weakness Break to deal damage, she is the best support you can slot in. If you are not running break teams, she is noticeably weaker than other Harmony options — do not pull expecting her to be a universal carry enabler.
Do not pull for Eidolons if you are F2P. E0 clears every piece of content in the game. E1 adds a Break Effect trace and extends her skill duration — a meaningful upgrade, but a luxury. E2+ are not worth the cost.
Pulling cost reality: Standard 50/50 odds. Expected cost for E0: ~80 pulls on average, up to 180 worst-case (two consecutive 50/50 losses). If you are close to pity, see our pity calculator to plan your budget before the banner closes.
F2P team reality: The Budget Break team (Sushang + Ruan Mei + Pela + Natasha) is genuinely viable for MoC 9–10 without any limited 5-stars beyond Ruan Mei herself. She is worth pulling precisely because she makes your break DPS — free or otherwise — significantly stronger.
Summary
If you play break teams, Ruan Mei is an S-tier pull. If you are not running break content, she is not the right support for you — other Harmony options will outperform her in non-break teams. Her F2P build requires zero pulls beyond the character herself, and her best relics are fully farmable.
